Hey guys, seems we got it working.

ACC Venset and I had a good game today, until ACC raged.

Anywho, the issue that seemed to stand in the way of it working for me is opening port 16000. Did that and it worked like a charm over GameRanger.

Yea i owned them, was 2v1 and I floored em. So now we need more people with xp/ vista to get it set up. need a 4 player game! 5 be even better.

It seems windows 7 can only join other windows 7 users so we are seeking all xp/ vista uses with port 16000 open to join in.

Couldn't get it working last night myself, Cossacks didn't want to start because of the fucking retarded resolution that WVM runs XP mode in. Evil or Very Mad

When I get home tonight I will give it another go, I found out how to set the thing to 32bit color mode (normally runs in 16bit), so that might help.

Cool beans, Alec 'n Scorch.

I just played a game against the AI in my infinite boredom. Can't wait to thrash some noobs who actually feel the pain.

I've found the ultimate solution to all your problems, and I have proof that it works too.

Virtual Box:
Free, open-source Windows emulator that actually works

Does it work with Cossacks? Yes!:
http://burnthesorbonne.com/stuff/index.php?entry=entry080210-223102

Can you use it if you have a pirated copy of Windows? Yes!:
http://www.virtualbox.org/

Is it easy to use and quick to download?
Apparently: Yes!

Remember: If you need to use Windows - best to use a copy that's not developed by Microsoft.

Fired up virtual box and am installing XP on it as we speak. Pretty amazing stuff!

Thanks to this program and the tinyxp Rev09 disk image I have on my HDD, I've got XP running in a separate bloody window after 5 minutes! Incredible

You sound like an advert.

BUT THE FACT IS IT'S REALLY THAT AWESOME.

By the by Las, if the game won't load up it's because of a small glitch it has when using XP.
Not everyone gets it, but if you do, just lob this file in the cossacks folder:

Ok when I load it up the resolution is very very low and only 20% on it is stretched across my screen.

Hopefully the patch will fix that

problems:

1. how do you get files onto your virtual HDD? right now I'm having to create isos so that I can load them onto the virtual drive

*edit* and yes the patch fixed it

2. i've got zero network adapters in the network connections folder and thjus no internet access.

Manual:

http://dlc-cdn-rd.sun.com/c1/virtualbox/3.1.6/UserManual.pdf?e=1272597657&h=2ac07159c3a7284ffaddf940e1d23122

Hard for me to say exactly what you should do without being able to see it, but the manual seems to say it's quite easy to get on the net.
Page 91 is the networking guide.

As far as the HDD goes, it depends what option you chose in the start-up menu.
You should be able to put anything you like into the ISO it created, and it uses that as a HDD.

EDIT: After some snooping, if you create a "shared folder" on your host, you can access it from the guest and assign it as a HDD if you wish.
Probably easiest.

Here's a fairly good starter's guide:

Maybe...

Haha you need GameRanger (we had moderate success with direct TCP hosting when Scorch did it, but nobody else has a static IP so it's too annoying).

But it's easy. Just open port 16000 (UDP/TCP), install, and run. Easy as pie.
